We pledge our own War on Waste and support to Local Farmers!

You may have seen the recent, and much publicised "War on Waste" TV Programme on the BBC. 

As you can imagine this a subject very close to our hearts, and our business, aka Wise Buys, is built solely on this premise of purchasing unwanted stock from Supermarkets and big companies.  This stock ranges from Short Dated stock, Best Before Dated stock or products with damaged packaging.

If we were not to buy these products there is a strong possibility that they would be discarded and put into landfill, which is an awful waste of perfectly good food, for which we are happy to sell to our customers at significantly reduced prices.

So with that in mind we are fully behind the #wastenot campaign which is putting pressure on Supermarkets to redistribute their unwanted stock, to shops like ours, charities and other social projects.

Something that was really prevalent on the programme was the wastage that Farmers have to endure due to their fruit and vegetables not fitting into the ridiculous cosmetic standards set by the Supermarkets.  

As part of our pledge we are calling out to Local farmers who have produce that is unwanted by the supermarkets or is surplus to requirements, that we would like to sell their products here in our store.  We hope that by working with the farmers we will be able to buy this produce which would end up being wasted, at prices below the supermarkets so then both the Farmer receives an income but the local community also benefits from lower cost products.

Also if there are any other local shops who have to throw away food that is past it's Best Before Date, Short Dated or has damaged packaging please contact us and we would be happy to work with you to reduce any wastage.

Great places to visit for free in Weymouth & Portland - Part 3 - Hardys Monument and Blackdown Woods

Although just outside Weymouth and Portland, Hardys Monument and Blackdown Woods is only a short drive away.   

To get there follow the Coast road out of Weymouth  towards Abbotsbury and Bridport, and then turn right after the Kings Arms pub in Portesham.  Follow this road now as it winds round the village and up a steep hill.  When you reach the brow of the hill there is a turning left which is signed posted to the monument. 

Be careful here as it is narrow in places, but there are passing laybys situated along the road.  Before long you will see the monument on your right.

According to the National Trust webpage on the site, which will also gives you the history of the building, parking is now available in the land around the monument. A Tea and Coffee van is now serving on the site.

Alternatively if you carry on further along this road, after coming down a hill you will see a parking area on your left, which is also the way into Blackdown Woods.

Once at the Monument, if the day is clear, you will be greeted with the most amazing view's over Weymouth, Portland and the surrounding Countryside and coast.

There are lots of pathways to explore round here, and places for the children to explore nature and run around.

Whether you have parked at the Monument or down by the woods entrance, the woods are easy enough to walk to.  Some of wooded areas can get boggy in the winter so wellies are advisable.  There are a number of circular walks around the woods, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour, but it's fairly easy to navigate round if you keep to the paths so you can't go too far wrong.  

The woods are very peaceful, and great for the children to play in, make dens, or play on rope swings.

For those who want some fresh air, great views and some fun in a beautiful Dorset woodland then you can't go far wrong with a visit to Hardy's Monument and the Blackdown woods, and what makes it even better is that it is free.

Bargain Fever hits Weymouth!

This may appear to be a post of self promotion, and I suppose it is, but it fits the bill when it comes to Bargains and saving money.  

On the 27th September at our Wise Buys store we will be celebrating our new Planning permission being granted which really secures our future.  So we have reason to celebrate as it has been a long time coming.

The event named Bargain Fever will take place from 10am to 4pm at our Store with lots of extra special discounts, offers and crazy low prices throughout on a variety of different lines.  We are amazingly cheap anyway so you can imagine what bargains can be had.  

On top of that we will have free giveaways, competitions, as well as our friends from community Radio Station Air 107.2fm coming along with their roadshow.

Fancys Farm, Portland - The best free places to visit for Families in Weymouth & Portland!

One of the best, if not the best Free place to visit for families in Weymouth and Portland in my opinion is Fancy's Farm.

Situated at the top of Portland and signposted from the Roundabout by Portland Heights Hotel, Fancys Farm is a community farm which offers Free entry and is open all year round from 10am until 5pm. With a variety of animals to see within their grounds including Pigs, Goats, Horses, Donkeys, Sheep, Wallabies, Chickens, Geese, Duck's and Rabbits, there are plenty of animals for adults and children of all ages to touch, feed and see.  

Animal feed can be purchased for £1 a tub, and is a great way to support the farm as well as feeding the animals.  (please note some animals cannot be fed but the signs tell you this).

Those who have already been will know about Archie the Greedy goat who descends on anyone with food.  Archie maybe greedy but he is very friendly and feeding him is a great way for children to interact with the animals.

Depending on the time of year and who has had babies, there is often a chance to feed the lambs and other little animals in the barn with staff supervision.

Aside from seeing the animals there are benches to sit outdoors for a picnic, with hot and cold food available to purchase from their cafe at very reasonable prices. ie: a nice cup sized cup of tea just £1....

Outside there are also cars and ride on toys for the children to play in, whilst indoors there is a nice play room with a padded floor, ball pool and hundreds of other toys to play with, and yes all of this is free.

It may be free but, as it is a community Farm it cannot run without the support and donations of those who visit so I would always recommend making a donation before you leave as this really is a fantastic free day out for the family.

Great places to visit for free in Weymouth & Portland - Part 2 - Nothe Gardens & Church Ope Cove

This weeks Great free places to visit features one well known Weymouth destination as well as a hidden gem on Portland.

As with the theme of my blog these two places are free to visit but still have plenty to see and do for families.

So here we go:

Nothe Gardens - Weymouth

The Nothe Gardens has to be one of my favourite places in Weymouth for a family picnic, get together or just a walk.  With fantastic garden's, stunning scenery and an abundance of paths, lawns, history and places for children to hide and play this is such an amazing place to enjoy with the family.

Situated just up from Weymouth's harbour and piers, it is a nice easy walk from the Town Centre.  If you have a push chair or pram, there can be a bit of a steep climb to reach to the gardens depending on which way you go.   The best bet if you are coming from town is to walk alongside the harbour (Nothe Side) towards the Pier and before you reach the walls of the Nothe there is a non stepped winding path up to the top.

There is parking available within the gardens but it is limited so it may be best to go for the car park at the back of Brewers Quay and from there you can walk to the Nothe with fairly easy access too.

By the main lawn area there is a small play area for the children, but with so much space it's a great place for a game of football, rounders...

In and around the gardens there are also various little nooks with benches and and places for BBQ's.

Just off from the Gardens there are great little Rock pools for catching crabs and climbing accessible for most supervised aged children.

There are a couple of catering places around the Nothe Gardens too for drinks, Ice Cream's and Snacks.

One of the gardens famous inhabitant is the Grey Squirrel.  These little fella's are used to Humans and are quite happy to approach you if you have a nut.  (you can buy these to take with you but in the summer months the Squirrels are spoiled so less likely to come and see you but also there are lots of nuts on the floor).  Just be careful though especially during winter months as they have a tendency to climb up your legs and do have a nasty bite, but if you keep them at arms length and throw a nut to them you will be fine.

I know there is a cost to it but a visit to the Nothe Fort is well worth a visit whilst you are there.  It is a massive part of Weymouth History and is a fantastic place to go and explore for Adults and Children alike for a small cost which the last time I asked was just £7 per adult.  The view from the top are absolutely amazing as well.

Church Ope Cove - Portland

I love this place, tons of history, amazing views, and a great little pirate/smuggler adventure for the children.  Beware though this isn't the easiest place to access with a pram or buggy.

The best place to park for this is along the Pennsylvania Road which is on the way to Portland Bill.  A good postcode is: DT5 1HU.   This postcode should take you outside of the Pennsylvania Castle site and you can park easily along this main road for free.  An alternative is to park in the Car Park of the Hayloft Cafe if you are going to make a visit in here.  It's a great little cafe with a menu that feature's many meals with food from their very own Gardens.

If you use the the Cafe Car Park as your starting point for your adventure,  walk back along the pavement with the Castle on your right until you see a sign pointing to your right for the Church Ope Cove.  Follow this down a lovely tree enclosed pathway until you reach the ancient ruins of Church Ope, with its many nooks and crannies and graves with the infamous Skull and crossbones featured.  

From here's you can walk down to the Cove itself.  It is quite steep but once you get there it is a fantastic little Pebble beach to sit, relax, have a picnic, throw pebbles....

On your way down keep your eyes out on the walls and steps as the last time we were there we saw lots of little lizards who don't seem to be phased by humans so great to show the kids.

It is quite a steep climb on the way back, but about half way up you will reach a nice plateau from which to look over the cove and the sea, as well as being able to see the walls of the ancient Rufus Castle, which you will walk past on your way back to the car. 

When you reach the top you will see to the right of you the charming little Portland Museum which has various events during the year and is a nice little slice of Island History.  

From here you will be back to the main road so will be able to walk back to your car.

I can't say enough about how nice this little walk is, and with some real history with a pirate twist thrown in for good measure too.

Great places to visit for free in Weymouth & Portland - Part 1 - Lodmoor Country Park & Sandsfoot Castle and Gardens

Here's the first of my blogs, where I aim to give local people and families, as well as those visitors to to the Weymouth & Portland area idea's, places to visit and things to do on a budget.

In this first instalment I will list two of my favourite places where, as a family you can enjoy some fantastic family time in a nice environment which the children can also enjoy.

As the old saying goes "The Best things in life are free" and within our fantastic part of the world there are so many amazing and beautiful spots to visit which are free.  So in no particular order here are the first two of my favourites:

Lodmoor Country Park - Weymouth

Close to the Beach and tourist attractions of the Sealife Centre and Sandworld, Lodmoor is often overlooked as a place to visit.

With good gravel and concrete paths all around the park it is still good to walk around in wet weather whilst also being disabled and buggy friendly.  There is also an outdoor green gym with various exercise apparatus for adults situated around the park.  There are also Maps around the park so you can get your bearings easily.

There is great park for the youngsters too in the shape of a Large Wooden Ship as well as various other play apparatus for the kids.

There is plenty of grass area's for a picnic's with some tables dotted around as well as some points for BBQ's and bins for rubbish.   

It is also a safe place to walk a dog, so perfect if you want to tire your animal out along with your children.  Children can also safely ride their bikes round here too.

There is also a small train (an additional cost) which travels around the park, throughout the summer months which can entertain the little ones even more.

Next too the Train Station is a small hut that sells Ice Cream's and other refreshments.

To extend your walk further you can also venture over to RSPB Nature reserve which I haven't actually done, but is all Wheelchair friendly with an additional 2.5km walk with hides for viewing.

Lodmoor hosts a number of Free events with this weekend being Air 107's Party in the Park Music and Family Festival.

Parking is available in the big car park outside the Sea Life Centre off of the Main beach road, but this can work out quite expensive.  Alternatively you can park for free down Grove Road or by the side roads from Weymouth Rugby Club as there is a nice path from here to Lodmoor.  For you foragers out there, this path also has an abundance of Blackberries during the summer months so a nice free treat.

Other paid for attractions within the Lodmoor area:  All walking distance from the Park
9 Hole Golf Course
Sea Life Centre
Pirate Golf
Sandworld
Various other rides, Go Karts, Slide...

Sandsfoot Castle - Wyke

Always a fantastic place for a family Picnic and place to visit. Parking can be limited at busy times but if you can find yourself a spot within close proximity it is free.  

The best bet is too ride your bikes or walk along the tarmacked Rodwell trail  which extends from close to town, all of the way to Ferrybridge in Wyke Regis, which then if you are really feeling fit joins onto the Portland Beach road which has a cycle path.

The Castle itself is a ruin but in recent years it has been stabilised with a wooden walk way all around which means you can walk inside and is great for the youngsters to have a look in.

The view from the gardens and Castle is stunning to say the least with a fantastic panorama of Portland and the Breakwater.  

The top part of the gardens is well maintained and has ponds with fish, and benches to sit and enjoy and a nice little cafe too.  For a picnic the lawn by the castle is lovely and a nice spot for the children to play with a nice bank perfect for roly polys.

Intro to my blog! Lara's Bargains. ....Bargains and Free places and events in Weymouth, Portland and Dorset!

Hi There

If you don't already know me, I am Lara from Wise Buys, the Bargain Brand discount Store, based on Lynch Lane, Weymouth.

As you can probably gather I love a bargain and providing the local community and Holiday makers alike with great quality products at fantastically low prices, but I don't stop there.   In and around Weymouth, Portland and the local Dorset Vicinity there are so many places for families to experience for Free or at a very low price and this blog is all about putting this information into one central point. This will mean you will never be stuck for ideas for great days out, things to do and places to go without spending a fortune, whether it be at home or visiting the many great places in the local area.
